Emily Osment Interview!

In honor of the release of Fight or Flight, here is an interview I had recently with Emily Osment. Be sure to go pick up a copy of the CD in stores today! 🙂

1. Where did you come up with the idea for the title of the CD?
I have always been fascinated by this inborn reaction and I love the idea of not having control over for a split second. I want my music to do the same. I want to shock in a musical way.
2. What are your plans now that Hannah Montana is finished?
As soon as the show wrapped I flew to Canada and headlined the Soda Pop tour for almost two months. I love being on tour and being able to give myself fully to the music and participate in every aspect of the creative process. I plan to continue promoting my record abroad and hope to keep a steady great relationship with my fans. I have some films projects in the works that I am so excited for as well.
3. What artist(s) would you say have influenced the music on Fight or Flight the most?
I guess I would have to say that the strange eclectic mix of music that I personally listen to affected my own sound in some way. I am inspired by bands like Passion Pit, Yeasayer, The White Rabbits, Broken Bells, RJD2, Incubus and my all time favorite, Radiohead.
4. What age group do you think your music will appeal to the most?
My hope for this record is that it will span across many different age groups and appeal to many different types of people. I love being at a show and looking out to see that kids dancing and the parents secretly enjoying it as well.
5. It seems that you keep your singing career separate from your career on Disney Channel. Do you think that will hurt or benefit you in the long run?
Disney Channel and Hannah Montana was a big part of my life for the past 6 years and it was extremely difficult to manage a music career as well as a full time acting gig. As lucky and as fortunate as I feel I still found myself complaining about not having enough time to do all the things that I love. I have been involved with music my whole life and my heart was set on an Indie label from the start, so I followed my own wishes and went with Wind-Up records and set myself on a new path. I don’t know if it will benefit me in the long run, but I feel like I am on a path that I love right now, so I can only hope.
6. Do you have any aspirations outside of the entertainment industry?
I plan on going to college in the near future. My current careers are taking me overseas far too much to give 100 percent to my education which will always be number one for me.
7. Could you see yourself being a part of a feature film?
Fortunately I have had that opportunity before and it has led me to where I am today. When it came to acting my goal from the beginning was to work in film. After five years of tv I think I am so ready to get back to it.
8. Who inspired you most to get into the entertainment industry?
The easy answer is my family, but it’s very true. They always did a fabulous job of playing excellent music around the house when I was a kid. I grew up listening to all the bands you’re supposed to listen to and I feel like still to this day that does wonders for me.
9. Do you prefer acting or performing music?
Both types of entertainment, while they are both performing, are still drastically different. One is all about playing a character while the other is simply just about you. I really do love both of the ways that I chose to spend my time and I don’t think I could ever chose just one.
10. What advice would you give to someone looking to get into the industry?
The only thing I would say would be not to get into the industry because of the glamorous things you see on TV. Do it because you absolutely can’t live without a creative process such as making music or acting and you know for a fact that you will implode if you do not express yourself in such a way, because it’s the only way you know how.
